The Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) yesterday morning organised a charity walkathon, which started and ended at the National Stadium in Berakas.
The walkathon was organised for the first time by the UNISSA Students Association in collaboration with the UNISSA Student Affairs Section.
Dr Haji Serbini bin Haji Matahir, Rector of UNISSA, launched the charity walkathon, which was participated by UNISSA lecturers, officers, staff and students.
He led the walkathon that covered a distance of six kilometres for men and four kilometres for women.
President of UNISSA Students Association, who was also chairman of the event, Awg Haji Md Syazwan Nizar, said so far the walkathon had raised $5,189.48.
He said five per cent of the funds will be donated to Children Orphans Fund, another five per cent will be for UNISSA community service and the rest will be kept for UNISSA Students Association Fund.
The charity walkathon aimed to instil an attitude of tolerance among the UNISSA community and encourage students to uphold a healthy mental and physical culture. Other objectives were to cultivate understanding and foster closer rapport among the UNISSA community, as well as to instill the spirit of charity.
The event also saw lucky draws which offered attractive prizes sponsored by private companies and lecturers of UNISSA.
